Focus on Kids with ImPACT

Main Message: Focus on Kids is intended to increase knowledge about HIV/AIDS and improve communication, decision-making, and condom use among young people. Abstinence and avoidance of substance use and drug trafficking are discussed. Parental involvement is also a key element of this program.
Target Population: High-risk African American youth living in low-income communities, both genders, ages 13-16 years old.
Length: Nine 1.5 hour weekly sessions plus.
Program Size: 5-12 participants.
Enable parent and youth to learn and practice communication skills.
Teach parent and youth proper condom use skills.
Distribute and guide parent and youth through an educational workbook that includes the following topics:
- Basic components of good communication and how to talk to your kids
- Importance of parental monitoring
- Condom use steps
- Facts about STDs and HIV, including prevalence data among young African Americans.
