Becoming a Responsible Teen (BART)

Main message: Provided teens with HIV/AIDS prevention information and training on communication/negotiating skills regarding sex.  Stressed abstinence is the best way to prevent HIV infection, but that other preventive measures such as condom use were also important.

Target Population: Both genders in 9th-12th grade

Length:Eight Sessions, 90-120 minute sessions 

Program Size:8-15 participants or less

Components:

  1. Youth received information about HIV/AIDS risk.
  2. Youth were trained to use their knowledge about HIV/AIDS to act on their own behalf
  3. Role playing was used to enhance the teens communication skills so they could better navigate high risk situations.

BART reinforced positive behaviors so they would become the norm within the teens social circles
