Trauma Informed Care
Teenagers are constantly making critical sexual decisions. Your pregnancy prevention work gives teens the best information with which to make those decisions. However, for you the practitioner, a working knowledge of trauma-informed care can also deepen your understanding - of just where a traumatized teenager may be coming from, how his or her sexual considerations may be “different,” and how your approach and curriculum could potentially be triggering to the teens you serve.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Consider the prevalence and impact of trauma in the lives of teens with whom they do pregnancy prevention work.
- Examine the relationship between trauma exposure, high-risk sexual behaviors, and pregnancy.
- Differentiate between trauma-informed care and trauma-specific treatment, and their appropriate applications.
- Adapt personal and programmatic interventions such that they fall in line with the key principles of trauma-informed care.
