Would You Like Some Tea?
Tuesday, July 26, 2016
The Tea Time with Teens Summer Leadership Institute for Girls 13-18 years old is already a huge success! Approximately 40 teens from across Marlboro County are learning about themselves and how to make healthy decisions for their lives. Mothers joined their daughters for the kickoff on Tuesday, 12 July 2016 in the Kinney Room at the Marian Wright Edelman Library. Mothers and daughters joined in “getting to know me” activities wherein daughters shared what seeds their mothers were planting in them and mothers shared what seeds they think that they are planting in their daughters. They all agreed that they learned interesting things about each other. At the close of that activity, each mother-daughter pair received a packet of seeds to plant and grow together. The kickoff closed with daughters presenting their mothers with beautiful red roses while sharing with them what they see blooming in their moms that they want to see blooming in themselves.
The second session held on Tuesday, 19 July session on Self Awareness- Social Media Perceptions and Safety led by Myah Woods, had the teens highly engaged. It was co-facilitated by CDF Freedom School female servant leader/interns, Cierra Blair, Felisa Cannon, Joey Dockery, Nay’Toniyan Green, Takeisha Harrington, Aliyah McLaughlin, and Louwanda Walton. In addition to the plenary session, they used lessons from the “Making A Difference" curriculum, borrowed from the South Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. Trinity United Methodist Women provided refreshments for this session.
The teens were super excited when Representative Pat Henegan addressed the group and announced that she will be taking them on a tour of the State Capitol and doing a lesson in the House Chambers on how a bill gets passed. She also told them that when the Legislative session begins again, she will present them on the House Floor!
The Tea Time with Teens Summer Leadership Closing Celebration is scheduled for 6:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, 2 August 2016 at the Marlboro County Community Center. Everyone is welcome.
