Although the main focus of the SC Campaign is on teen pregnancy prevention efforts in South Carolina, our knowledge, staff, and partners have the ability to reach internationally as well.  Rena Dixon, Health Services Coordinator at the SC Campaign, was able to take her work abroad as she provided technical assistance for the development of Embarazo Adolescente (Teen Pregnancy), an e-book developed by the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) in Mexico.  As a member of the advisory board that developed the resource, Dixon and a team of professionals worked together to create the publication for healthcare providers in Mexico.

For Dixon, her background with the SC Campaign was able to provide her with the knowledge she needed to help INSP take their teen pregnancy prevention efforts to the next level.  “They were starting from the very beginning, so I had to backtrack and go over some basics about what needs to be done when communicating with healthcare providers and also with teens,” said Dixon. “We have the benefit of having a lot of research and experience in that area, so my goal was to relay that information to them.”

Dixon also helped develop a massive online open course (MOOC) the can be used alongside the e-book.  She was able to use her expertise to give insight into communicating with adolescents by focusing on growth and development and how healthcare providers can better communicate with teens about contraception.

Way to go, Rena!
