Science Based Approaches

Since its inception, the SC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy has been a vocal advocate for comprehensive sexuality education and the use of Science-Based Approaches in the prevention of teen pregnancy. The organization’s position on Science-Based Approaches has been supported by President Obama's Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative through the Office of Adolescent Health and a longstanding partnership with The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Communitywide Initiatives. The SC Campaign's commitment to Science Based Approaches (SBAs) is exemplified first by our desire to help local programs understand the ideal components of a SBA including:

  • Development of Goals and Objectives informed by a Needs and Resources Assessment and systematically addressed by a Behavior-Determinant-Interventions (BDI) Logic Model
  • Selection and Implementation with fidelity of a Science-Based Program informed by applicable Health Behavior and/or Health Education Theory as well as target population, community, and organizational fit
  • Evaluation of both how the Science-Based Program was implemented and what Knowledge-Attitude-Behavior outcomes it achieved in the program participants
  • Reflection on and inclusion of evaluation data in subsequent program replication to ensure Continuous Quality Improvement and to assist in achieving Program Sustainability

We further demonstrate this commitment to SBAs by assisting local programs to incorporate these fundamental components into their work. Through the CDC project and multiple other funding sources, the SC Campaign offers training and assistance to over 80 local programs throughout South Carolina – including schools, community-based organizations, health centers, faith institutions and others – to utilize a Science Based Approach when working to prevent teen pregnancy.

The SC Campaign promotes the use of Science Based Approaches throughout all of our trainings, in all of our Media/Advocacy efforts, via our comprehensive approach to Research and Evaluation, and through our latest innovation in professional development - our Online Learning Center. The incorporation of Science Based Approaches in all of our work underscores our belief that utilizing the components of a Science-Based Approach, including research proven curricula, can and does decrease teen pregnancy rates.

Our work on Science Based Approaches is supported by several national partners including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, Healthy Teen Network and Advocates for Youth.
