8 Things You Might Not Know About Teen Pregnancy

  1. Teen pregnancy rates in South Carolina have decreased by almost 1/3 (29%) since 1994 (SC DHEC, 2007).
  2. Yet, nearly 10,000 young girls get pregnant in our state each year - one every 58 minutes! (SC DHEC, 2007).
  3. 81% of registered voters in South Carolina think that sex education in public schools should contain information on BOTH abstinence and contraception (SC Speaks 2004).
  4. In South Carolina - 52% of all high school students (grades 9-12) have had sex. (Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 2005).
  5. Many factors impact teen's choices about sex: parents, school leaders, faith groups, and other community leaders can all play a role to help prevent and reduce teen pregnancy in their communities and in our state.
  6. 87% of teens agree that it would be easier for them to delay sex and prevent teen pregnancy if they were able to have more open, honest conversations about the topic with their parents (National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy).
  7. Children of teen mothers are more likely to become teen mothers themselves (girls), are more likely to end up in prison (boys), are very likely to become pregnant again while still a teen, and are less likely to finish high school.
  8. Prevention pays! The progress South Carolina has made in reducing teen childbearing save taxpayers an estimated $56 million in 2004 alone (National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy).
