The South Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy is pleased to celebrate with Suzan D. Boyd and M. Edward Sellers on their selection as the United Way of the Midland's Humanitarian of the Year. The United Way's Humanitarian of the Year Award honors those who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in philanthropy and human services and who exert a major impact on changing and improving conditions for Midlands residents.
"I couldn't think of two more deserving recipients," said Forrest Alton SC Campaign executive director. "Both individually and as a couple, Suzan and Ed have meant so much to teen pregnancy prevention efforts in South Carolina, to the South Carolina Campiagn to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and most importantly to the youth of our state."
"Both Ed and Suzan have the unique talent of taking complicated social problems, analyzing the components of those problems and finding solutions that work," said Mac Bennett, President & CEO of United Way of the Midlands. "Even more importantly, both Ed and Suzan have the ability to lead others into making solutions realities."
Suzan D. Boyd, Ph.D., former executive director of the South Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, increased the nonprofit agency's annual revenues from approximately $400,000 to $1,600,000 during her five year tenure. Dr. boyd participates yearly in the March of Dimes Walk America and the First Ladies Walk to Figh Breast Cancer. She also "adopts" disadvantaged children by paying for summer camp, school supplies and other needed items, reading and homework mentoring.
M. Edward Sellers, chairman and CEO of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, has served on countless charitable and civic boards and committees, notably New Carolina and Covering Carolina, two groups he pioneered to support all residents of South Carolina. He has also served on the boards of united Way of the Midlands, Central Carolina Community Foundation, ETV Endowment and Palmetto Project. Under his leadership, BlueCross has become the largest contributor to United Way of the Midlands with employees pledging over $1 million each of the last four years.
