Day 1 - Georgetown, SC

Posted on 12/5/08

What a great way to start the Road Show - in my old haunt... Georgetown, SC! It was great to wake up this morning to a familiar setting and then speak to so many familiar faces. I started my career in teen pregnancy prevention here eight years ago. Probably the most fun was seeing Dr. Mary Prince, Lynne Ford and Amy Brennan all in the room together - that's the trio that interviewed me for my first post-college job at Service Over Self!

Many things have changed since I left Georgetown six years ago, but one has not - there is a huge gathering of caring adults who will do whatever they can to protect the youth of this county. Our challenge today was to re-energize those committed adults and encourage them to recommit an investment in young people. I think that we were successful in doing so.

The morning started with 34 people at a key leader breakfast, not counting the wonderful barbershop quartet that opened the morning. Then it was on to Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island for a series of individual meetings and, of course, more food. What would a trip to the Low Country be without a drop-in at The Original Hammock Shops in Pawleys Island. To conclude the night we all got back together at Mary Prince's house (our Director of Research and Evaluation) and were treated to an awesome "Bubble-Q"... for those of you new to that term like I was a few short weeks ago - it's champagne and barbeque... that's how we do it in the south!

And that my friends is enough for one day... on to Florence in the AM... more later!
