Faith Based Initiative

Teen pregnancy and births continue to be a major issue in South Carolina and the SC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy recognizes the need to take a comprehensive community approach to addressing this critical issues. Research indicates that faith communities have a tremendous potential for nurturing the healthy development of youth. In fact, Dr. Douglas Kirby, Ph.D., senior research analyst for ETR Associates, identified greater religious affiliation, having a conservative religious affiliation and more frequent attendance as protective factors to the initiation of sex. Faith Communities play a vital role in the lives of many teens and their parents, and have a unique opportunity to significantly impact those lives.

In 2003, the Campaign instituted the Faith Initiative and formed an Advisory Council with representatives from across the state to help guide the Initiative. Through a series of trainings opportunities, dissemination of data and other resources, the Campaign will work to build the capacity of faith leaders to address the issues of teen sexuality and teen pregnancy with their congregations and communities.
