Communities Caring for Teens Project

In October of 2002 the SC Campaign received funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to implement programs activities designed at increasing local pregnancy prevention initiatives understanding and implementation of science based approaches. The Campaign is one of five state, and three national organizations who received three-year funding from the CDC to implement such an initiative.

This project, named Communities Caring for Teens, has allowed the Campaign to provide a series of educational and training opportunities at the local and state level in the following key areas: development of local advisory committees, use science based approaches, BDI Logic Models, evaluation. Training is provided both by Campaign staff and numerous national experts. Much of the Campaign's work in these areas is targeted to the Community Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (CAPP) Programs; Medicaid Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Service (MAPPS) Providers; and five initiatives funded by the New Morning Foundation.

Over the past two years, the Campaign has emphasized a commitment to implementing research proven, science based programs at the local level. Through training opportunities, individual consultations with national leaders, and follow-up technical assistance, local program staff have had the opportunity to become more familiar with science based approaches, BDI Logic Models, the implementation of programs that work, and the importance of program evaluation.

Programming for the Communities Caring for Teens Project is now in its third year of funding. For more information on the Communities Caring for Teens Project, please contact Forrest L. Alton, Associate Director, at (803) 771-7700 ext. 117 or falton@teenpregnancysc.org.
