Advocacy for Comprehensive Health Education (CHE) and Teen Pregnancy Prevention
The SC Campaign recognizes the need for community education and awareness of teen pregnancy and its many repercussions in the state. The SC Campaign works continuously to educate parents, legislators, community leaders, faith leaders, and business leaders on the impact that teen pregnancy has on our communities as well as the importance of teen pregnancy prevention for the health and wellness of our youth. In previous years, the Campaign, along with strong community leaders and legislators, led the grassroots movement to establish funding for the local teen pregnancy prevention programs and continues to work with both the SC Legislature and the Department of Social Services to ensure the continued funding of local teen pregnancy programs. Campaign staff work year round to education SC legislators on and engage them in this important issue. At the same time, training and technical assistance is provided to local programs and communities to assist and encourage them with getting involved in advocacy on the local level.

Comprehensive Health Education
As explained in the South Carolina Speaks study, the South Carolina Comprehensive Health Education Act, enacted in 1988, requires schools to take an abstinence-based, age-appropriate approach to reproductive health education and pregnancy prevention education. Specifically, the act states that sex education should "stress the importance of abstaining from sexual activity" and "explain the methods of contraception and the risks and benefits of each method." Other topic required to be included in sex education instruction are human physiology, relationships, human development, criminal sexual conduct, peer pressure and responsible behavior.
